When Australians get sick, cost shouldn’t stop them getting help.
1.5 million Australians can’t afford to see a specialist when they need one. More than one in ten can’t afford their prescriptions. Health Assist was set up in 2016 to do something about that.
The gap no one talks about
Seeing a specialist costs money. So does filling a prescription, buying a walking frame, or getting a medical aid your doctor has recommended.
For a lot of Australians, those costs just aren’t manageable. Not because they’re being careless with money. Because the bills are genuinely too big.
That’s what we work on.
How we help
Health Assist is a registered charity and public benevolent institution. We support Australians who can’t cover their medical costs out of pocket.
That might mean:
- Help with specialist fees or medical appointments
- Covering the cost of prescribed medications
- Funding medical aids, equipment, or daily living supports
- Connecting people with allied health and ancillary services
- Guidance on what help is available and how to access it
We don’t ask people to jump through hoops. We just try to help.
We work with people across Australia
Our support reaches people in cities, regional towns, and rural communities. Single parents, pensioners, families dealing with a serious diagnosis. People who were managing fine until they weren’t.
If you’re struggling to cover a medical cost and don’t know where to turn, we want to hear from you.
In their own words
I can’t afford to pay my normal bills when I have these huge out-of-pocket expenses. Being a single mum trying to keep my head above water, coping with cancer treatments on top — it’s too much.”
