“The families I’ve helped have just been so appreciative, they are going through so much, to have someone just come in and help them with basic stuff means a lot. I’ve had a mum we were helping just hug me and cry because I got all the backlog of washing done and sorted and put away, she just was not well enough and her kids had been doing their best you know, it’s that stuff that I find rewarding, and it’s not hard stuff – there are so many people out there that just don’t have family or people around them that can help when they need it.” Bronwyn, Health Assist Volunteer (Melbourne)

Health Assist Charity Volunteer Program Matches Your Skills and Interests with Our Client’s Needs
Health Assist Charity Volunteer Program works to match the skills and interests of our volunteers with the needs of our clients: from providing transport for elderly clients to appointments; coordinating donations of medical devices or home assistance items; to dog walking; household services; handyman tasks; fundraising; or even childcare services.

What kind of work do Health Assist Volunteers Do?
“I had to get my sister to drive me as I don’t have a car, we live about 110km from this specialist, my sister had to take the day off work to take me to this appointment as the community transport was booked out on this day. She works casual so it cost her money to take the time off. I have had to do this two times already and they want me to go back but I can’t keep asking her to take time off to drive me.”
Could you provide transport services to medical appointments?
As a volunteer you can help people struggling with illness and financial disadvantage to get to and from medical appointments. If you can’t afford a car, are too sick to drive and don’t have someone available to take you to and from frequent medical appointments, it can mean simply missing out on receiving medical care. Unfortunately we see this happening far too often to elderly community members who become isolated and without support. You can help bring social contact and support to elderly people in your community simply by driving them to and from appointments and helping them to access the medical care they need to manage their illness.
“It was critical that Isla had an environment that was free from germs before we could bring her home, as the treatment she has had to endure and will continue to endure over the next 30 months decreases her little immune system. Health Assist organised a cleaner for us at a time when we were just overwhelmed by everything that was going on. Knowing we were bringing her home to a clean house may not seem like much, but it was a huge assistance for us.” Leanne, Health Assist client
Support a family with a sick child by providing household services
If you can clean a house, you can help a family like Leanne and Andrew’s family, their little girl Isla was struck down with Pre B acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. Although Leanne and Andrew have been able to manage the medical costs and gain access to medical professionals to help Isla, the time and strain of trying to care for Isla and her two brothers during Isla’s time in hospital was just too much to keep on top of their household cleaning. Our volunteers were able to support Isla and her family by providing household cleaning services for the family so that Isla could be brought home to a clean house.
Providing Company and Peace of Mind
As a volunteer with Health Assist you could help a family struggling with ill health and disadvantage simply by being present. When someone you care for is unwell, simple tasks like getting to the shops can feel impossible as you worry about whether they will be okay while you are gone. By simply sitting with an ill person, while their primary carer gets some errands done, or has some much needed respite you provide a huge helping hand. Disadvantaged families often cannot afford the cost of respite care and may either not be eligible or have difficulty accessing funding to pay for this type of service.

Australian Businesses Donating Needed Equipment and Services to Sick Aussies

Many of our client’s struggle financially to purchase home help items like shower chairs, eating or drinking aids, medical alarms and other items that can relieve some of the stresses and strains of being ill, or of caring for someone who is seriously ill. By working with individuals and companies willing to donate purchased items to sick Aussie in need, we are able to provide a better quality of life for sick and disadvantaged Australians. If you, or your business are able to assist us, please get in touch by phone or email to see what needs we currently have and how you can get involved.
